Tarot's Dance with Infinity - The Enigmatic Eight!

I had the honour of being asked by the Tarot Guild of Australia to write a couple of articles for their blog and their newsletter.

This is one of those articles :)

The Enigmatic Eight: Tarot's Dance with Infinity

Ah, the number eight. Not just a lucky charm in numerology or the number of legs on a particularly menacing spider, but a figure that holds profound significance in the mystical world of Tarot. Flip it sideways, and voila - you’re staring at the infinity symbol , that elegant loop of endless possibility. Coincidence? Hardly. The Tarot doesn’t do coincidences; it thrives on synchronicity, symbolism, and the occasional dramatic plot twist.

In Tarot, the number eight is a powerhouse. It embodies themes of strength, control, balance, and the eternal cycle of growth and transformation. Think of it as the universe's cosmic reminder that what goes around truly does come around—but with flair.

Major Arcana's Not-So-Subtle Nods to Eight:

Take Strength (often the eighth card in traditional decks). What graces its imagery? A serene figure, gently taming a lion, often crowned with the infinity symbol hovering above their head. This isn’t just decorative flair; it's a visual whisper that true strength isn’t about brute force. It's about resilience, patience, and an understanding that power flows endlessly when sourced from within.

Then there’s The Magician, the original cosmic multitasker. Look closely, and you’ll spot the infinity symbol floating above his head like a divine Wi-Fi signal, connecting him to endless potential. His message? Manifestation isn't a one-time trick; it's the art of channelling infinite possibilities into tangible reality – or crafting the biggest illusion of all time! The number eight hums quietly in the background, a reminder that true magic lies in the balance between the eternal and the earthly—or, in modern terms, juggling your dreams without dropping your coffee. He very much is reminding us that every action echoes across time and space in a loop that never truly ends.

The Suit of Eights: Lessons in Motion:

In the Minor Arcana, the eights continue their narrative, each suit offering its unique spin:

  • Eight of Wands: Rapid movement, travel, swift decisions, and messages flying faster than your last caffeine-fuelled text marathon.

  • Eight of Cups: A soulful journey of leaving behind what no longer serves you, embracing the infinite quest for deeper meaning. Off to ponder the bigger meaning of life and realising that you are the missing cup itself!

  • Eight of Swords: Feeling trapped? It’s often a mental maze of your own making. The infinity here is the looping thought patterns that can ensnare us—until we choose to step out.

  • Eight of Pentacles: The artisan card. Repetition, mastery, dedication. The infinity here is the enduring cycle of learning, practicing, and perfecting your craft

Infinity: A Loop or a Ladder?

So, is the infinity symbol a never-ending loop or an ever-climbing spiral? In Tarot, it’s both. It represents the cycles we move through, the lessons we revisit, and the growth we achieve with each rotation. The number eight invites us to recognize patterns not as traps but as opportunities to rise, refine, and redefine.

Next time you pull an eight in your reading, pause. Feel that subtle hum of infinite potential. Whether it whispers of strength, magic, movement, introspection, or mastery, know that you’re tapping into a universal rhythm—an endless dance with destiny, all spun from the magic of a simple, symmetrical figure.

Stay curious, stay infinite.
